Change Over Time

Baalbek Temples have rarely changed over time, but the city has seen some change.

9000 BC- Baalbek was originally founded.

9300 Years Later in: 

332 AD- Alexander The Great and his army takes over Baalbek and renames it Heliopolis.

302 Years Later in:

634 AD- Arabic General Abu 'Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah conquered "Heliopolis" and gave back the original name of Baalbek.

1350 Years Later in:

1984- First recognized as a UNESCO Heritage Site. 

Since 1984, Baalbek has doubled in population. 

The Umayyad Mosque has been identified as one of the oldest Religious Centers of the Islamic World.
